“No Pay Freeze” Misses the Point

While I appreciate the Maroon’s comparative coverage of budget problems at other universities (http://www.chicagomaroon.com/2009/2/27/as-peer-institutions-freeze-pay-u-of-c-resists), I’m unhappy that a major difference between MIT and the U of C got washed out in the general headline about no pay freeze at UChicago. What should have been of great importance to the story was how MIT has avoided laying off any of its staff, anywhere in the university, and is *sacrificing* for the sake of its members on the bottom of the hierarchy. What a difference it would have made to the University’s sense of self-respect if faculty and administrators had also taken a pay freeze (as some faculty offered to do, I heard, but were turned down), instead of firing 450 staff with no notice in a horrible economy! Please keep in mind that in writing the news, it’s the people who matter, not the policies.
